Power Rangers Movie Reboot

Lionsgate and Haim Saban announced today that they have struck a deal to produce a new live action film based on Saban's 1993 television series Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

The new franchise will reportedly re-imagine the Power Rangers as a group of high school kids with unusual super powers, who must learn to harness their abilities as a group in order to save the world.

So it sounds like they had their powers from the start rather than being given them by Zordon, but I hope it just sounds like that because of the way it was worded.

I'd rather they would make the dark Wolverine-esque Green Ranger movie that Jason David Frank is interested in making, but I'm so looking forward to this, even if it's rubbish I'm sure I'd still enjoy it :D

With how poorly Saban has been treating the franchise as of late (Samurai, Super Samurai and Super Megaforce have just been poorly-written, shoddily-edited, sanitized versions of the original Super Sentai seasons), I can't say that I'm particularly enthused. I haven't seen anything particularly fun or entertaining from Power Rangers since RPM, and that was a Disney season! While it's entirely possible that something good can come out of this, I'm not holding out hope. Saban's recent track record with the franchise leaves a lot to be desired.

And yes, I also would have preferred Jason David Frank's PG-13 Green Ranger movie.

Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz (X-Men: First Class and Thor) are writing the script for the movie. Roberto Orci (Star Trek and Transformers) is executive producer and will develop the storyline.

sounds good enough to me ^_^

edit: character descriptions have been revealed
Spoiler: show
Jason – 17 years old, the makings of someone or something great if he would just get out of his own way. Jason was a legend of this town—a freshman quarterback with the skills to take him all the way. People knew his name. Children wore his jersey. Until, one night Jason wrapped his car around a pole and busted out his knee. Everything Jason was going to become ended in an instant. And with it, he lost himself. When we meet him at the start of the film, he's a kid in need of redemption. By the end, he'll be leading this disparate group of teens to shed their individual baggage and find who they truly are.

Kimberly – 17 years old, unconventionally cool all in a way the popular girls wish they were. In fact, she was one of those girls, but isn't anymore. Not since she's returned to school after an absence of 6 months. Rumors are flying as to why; rumors she seems not to care about, because she's come back with this new rebel-without-a-cause, edgy attitude. But the truth is, it's all masking a deep secret that makes her feel profoundly vulnerable.

Trini – 17 years old, mysterious and extremely bright. Her parents constantly move for work, making Trini the perpetual new girl to any school. A loner who owns it, Trini is self-sufficient, contemplative, but always observant. All she wants is to find her gang of friends, but she'll never admit it – least of all to herself.

Billy – 17 years old, slight and awkward. Billy is challenged in his abilities to communicate and interact socially. Whip-smart and sweet, but always odd. Sometimes in a fun way, sometimes not, Billy is a kid with no filter. Showing his emotions, understanding sarcasm, and dealing with his OCD is a constant challenge. Has never really had any friends and instantly gravitates towards Jason.

Zack – 17 years old, always the life of the party. Filled with bravado and swagger, Zack's tough and cool on the exterior. A charming guy who's never had trouble with the one-liner, nor lacked confidence around women. A great athlete that's never wanted to play on any team but his own. Zack advertises everything about himself, except the truth, which is that he lives in a trailer park with his single mom, and because of it, feels deeply inferior to all his peers.

Love how they took the fairly stock-and-standard archetypes of the original show and used that as a starting point for more three-dimensional and realistic characters. Their individual charms are still intact (Zack sounds really fun), it's just that the characters are less one-sided and have better opportunities for development and drama.

Color me interested for this movie.

I'll have you know that it's elitist "I hate it so it's garbage" behavior that made me and T_L mortal enemies, and just because you don't like it and aren't excited for it doesn't mean other people don't have the right to be. For your own sake, if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it. You don't see me randomly digging up the Sword Art Online thread to bash the show, what makes you think this is acceptable behavior?

I don't like people who behave like this. You only opened the thread to cause trouble. Leave.

EDIT: Apologies if this sounds mean, but I'm done dealing with rude and inconsiderate people. Don't be one of those people.

Chill man, didn't mean to make you so upset. But I'm not calling it garbage cause I didn't like it, I didn't like it cause it wasn't any good. I watched the first episode live on TV, and I know you didnt cause ya werent born yet. And we all went to school talking about how cool it was. And by the end of the 2nd episode we were like "well this blows" and every episode thereafter was the same, as it has been for the last 20 years. It was cheesy, yeah, but the problem with every remake nowadays is it wont even be funny to make fun of, itll be lacking for the kids now and itll be lacking for any diehard fans, so all I can hope for is it be a straight to DVD movie.

Sorry that you got so mad cause my opinion isnt the same. Remember "the internet is a communication tool used the world over where people come together to bitch about movies and share pornography with one another."
