A sequel to a USA flop is never surprising now. Hollywood movies are made for the global audiences in mind, and if it is very profitable in China or several other countries, a film WILL get a sequel, even if no Americans liked the first film.

What is surprising about Pacific Rim getting one though is that it wasn't a terribly profitable theatre film even with the world market taken into account. Remember, the net gross doesn't go to the company and they were right on the line.

Apparently there's going to be an animated series too

Which is interesting, as I did say at the time the film could have worked as a miniseries or something.

they're in talks with Japanese studios to animate it, the story is planned for 13 episodes, it'll act as a bridge between the first movie and the sequel

Perfect reason for me to finally see Pacific Rim then!

apparently production of Pacific Rim 2 has been halted indefinitely
Quote:
Legendary wanted to produce a sequel to del Toro's Pacific Rim, which was made under the Warners deal and turned into one of those films that grosses a lot ($411 million worldwide) while being so costly that a follow-up isn't a sure thing. Sources say Legendary liked that the original performed exceptionally well in China, where the company is heavily invested, but for now the project — which had been ramping up to make a release date in August 2017 — has been halted indefinitely and will be pushed back (if it gets made at all).
