Columbia Pictures Officially Developing a "Sonic the Hedgehog" Feature Film

It has been recently announced that major production studio Columbia Pictures is in the process of developing a full-length motion picture based on SEGA's bestselling Sonic the Hedgehog video game franchise.

http://www.egmnow.com/articles/news/...dgehog-movie/#

The new film, coproduced by Original Films and with Neal Moritz and Toby Ascher attached as producers, will be a darker take on the franchise aimed at older audiences that grew up with games such as Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2, and will reportedly mix live action and CG. People on the short list for lead writer include Brad Bird (The Incredibles, The Iron Giant, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol), Phil Johnston (Wreck-It Ralph) and duo team Wernick & Reese (Zombieland, Monsters Inc.).

While it is easy to write this off as being utter shit from the get-go, consider the list of writers being potentially commissioned to write for Sonic. Each one has experience with animation and CG, and two of the biggest writers (Bird and the Wernick/Reeese duo) have experience doing films succefully in both live action and animation, with Bird being the bigger name between the two. I'm actually rather optimistic in how this film will turn out. The guys at Columbia are at least shortlisting people who will most likely know how to make a project like this work, so that alone is a step in the right direction. Once we get a writer and director attached (and I'm praying to God that Brad Bird will be hired for both), we'll be able to get a decent idea of which direction the film is headed. Until then, fingers crossed.

This is what I said earlier on FB. Hollywood is finally turning around to using cartoonish video game characters for potential movie material.

.... what makes me think this is just Warner Bros just seeing how incredible Wreck-It Ralph became from their rival, and snatched Phil Johnston up to work for them instead, expanding from Sonic's role in that film and trying to get a piece of the pie from the acclaim?

The article Shiraishi posted was published the 21st of March, so perhaps not. I wish it was a joke though. This film is going to be shit.

...yeah.

.....yeah.....

For one thing, would a darker version of Sonic really be a good idea? Wasn't the idea of a darker video game movie dead in the early 2000's? Also, Brad Bird is busy with Tomorrowland and the Incredibles sequel.

To be fair, most of those were also Uwe Boll if memory serves.

it seems the production company has changed, Sony and Marza Animation Planet are collaborating for the Sonic movie now.
Neal Moritz is still producing it, Toby Ascher is still executive producer, though the writers have changed~

And the writers are known primarily for their work as part of a comedy troupe. In other words, this movie is most-likely going to be a comedy.

I honestly would like it if the film at least balanced comedy with some darker elements, like the Sonic Adventure games did. I'm really not a fan of the Sonic series being outright farce.
