It ALWAYS terrifies me that the people who conduct such acts are as intelligent as the rest of us.

This just in. The jury for the Boston Bomb Marathon trial has found Dzhokhar Tsarnaev guilty for his role in the deadly attacks which killed 3 people and injured nearly 300. The same jury who found Tsarnaev guilty will decide whether he should live or die. The penalty phase will begin next week.

This is the agreed upon result by jury. I suspect it'll have multiple appeals though (capital punishment typically does if memory serves).

I assume that the young jackass thinks this means Uncle Sam will give him his Martyrdom Express ticket to Uncle Muhammad's Bodacious Bordello In The Sky. How is this punishing him?

That's precisely the argument used by the excellent satire found on The Onion.

In all seriousness though, I would actually call this a punishment for Tsarnaev. Given that he willingly surrendered to police, I think he specifically was wanting to escape and live another day (as oppose to his brother who went to suicide by cop).

But The Onion' actual argument is correct: this is nothing but fuel for other violent and extreme fanatics.

Out of curiosity- what's the cost of executing someone versus how much the state would have to pay to keep him in prison for life?

Because if it's lower, then it would help cut back however much on the absurdity that is what's spent on prisons. Not that this is a good argument for increasing capital punishment- just that in this case, where he's been found guilty for what he's done(and considering what he's done), why further increase the burden on the public with this alternative available?

I don't particularly hold a strong view either way, as this is a messy topic and I don't feel I'm adequately informed to really support one side or another, but it's something to think about I suppose.
