Is there a difference between the Anime and Manga?

Now, i have only seen the Anime, but parts of what i have read about the Manga seem to differ.

So, it makes me wonder?

Are the Manga and Anime indentical?
Are they the same with small unimportant differences?
Or are they seperate stories?

Most of the manga I've read is very similar to the anime. For example, in the last episode of Ika Musume, Ika grows her tentacles back after she has to save Ekio. In the manga, she grows them back when the whale is thrown at her.

The anime is very good to adapt the manga I think, so there are not many differences.
The biggest example I can think of right now is the last episode of the anime, that never happened in the manga. The end of the high school for the four main girls is melancholic but not as much as in the anime, but it's far funnier in the manga.
The OVA of course never happened either.
Also, we never get to see or hear about Ayano's boyfriend in the anime, let alone know that he is Misao's brother.

I guess that makes me stick to the Anime then, so i need not buy the Manga if it is the same.

Thanks!

I'd recommend the manga as well. It involves more than the anime. Beside the anime only covers a bit more than the three first volumes of the manga, and as of today there are eight volumes released. In other words, there are a lot more Lucky Star available through the manga than the anime.

The art style is a bit different? There's more color in the anime? There is sound in the anime? There's less movement in the manga?
