The ass-guns were cannon (see what I did there?) (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main.IncrediblyLamePun) :P I suppose they were, and not just some American, lame joke they added to appeal to audiences.

However, the lead girl DOES appear to be an American addition. Purely a poorly-made executive decision the artists had to go along with! She doesn't even LOOK like she belongs in the same universe as the other Tezuka-styled characters! I hope I change my mind when the film's released!!! The designs for the robots, and the red sun-thing, are all awesome however.
