Alternatively, my answer has always been "capabilities are only as good as they're used for". Most games I've ever cared for don't need much more than a 2003 to run. Hell, a vast majority of my desktop's worth of games probably could have run on my old computer still. New games seem to miss the old world touch of solid core, everything else as cake...probably why I'm still holding onto my AW2 cartridge and why I'm on my 12th year of Master of Orion II.

The GPU is (typically) the most expensive part in a computer (which is what modern consoles are). By showing that the gpu is equivalent to a cheap and outdated card, they are showing that the clear intention is not to move technological advancements forward, but to simply make a quick profit. By the time the "720" (as I'll refer to it as) comes out, the equivalent card will likely be under $50. In the past the strategy is typically to take a fairly modern gpu and mass produce it to cut costs. By the time it's released, it is still obviously outdated, but to a much lesser extent than what we are seeing here.

You also seem to imply that graphics are the only thing that improvements in technology can bring. This is a blatantly false assumption, and if John Carmack were dead he'd be rolling in his grave. Physics is just one of many things that improve as we move forward. It used to be that using hitscan in a realistic shooter or sim was completely acceptable; now it would make your game a joke. Improvements in physics decrease the number of static objects on a screen at once. It is now fairly common to see barrels, rocks, weapons, and (in some cases) even walls be thrown about or destroyed due to some explosion or collision. When done correctly, these things can truly enhance an experience, not just make it a bit prettier to look at.

While you may consider it to be in the field of graphics, tweaks such as draw distance can also enhance an experience for obvious reasons. Being able to actually see where I'm going beats using a map nine times out of ten. A space sim (such as freespace or the X series) with a low maximum draw distance would be lucky to sell a few hundred copies. No one wants to be flying around just to see a large planet appear out of nothing. It cripples the sense of immersion, and it can be just plain annoying.

You're also giving even graphics too little credit. The horror genre benefits highly from improvements made to technology. Improvements in lighting effects, particles (such as dust or smoke), and AI are all things that can truly immerse the player into the game. Amnesia would have been impossible even 10 years ago, and many people consider it to be one of the most terrifying games ever made.

I'm in now way saying that technology makes a masterpiece, because it doesn't. What it does do however, is allow developers to tear down the walls of limitation and create the game of their dreams. In the past, developers were forced to work around the limited tech they had, and while they were still able to create amazing games, today they would be able to get much closer to their original vision. There is no downside to technological improvements, and I see absolutely no reason why they should be shunned.

We had that before. The most accurate shooter games are from the early 2000's. I've played a few of the newer ones at friend's houses and they lose the realism. Sure, the physics improve, but the core is getting worse.

Unless the rocks, barrels, and walls can kill you when they collapse and fly around, they're not much more than scenic porn. Again, I can't emphasize how much the core of the game matters. I don't mind if the game is blurry or if the walls don't have bullet holes in them. Give me a game which puts me in the mindset of a shooter where positioning, tactics, and planning mean something.

I'm not sure. My top 3 generally fall under pretty old (Fatal Frame 2, Silent Hill 2, and because of the atmosphere, Pathologic as society begins to break down and enemies with guns actually scare the hell out of you. They are 2003, 2001, and ugly 2005 respectively). It's much more about the atmosphere created, not the clearness of the graphics or the rendering of the fog. I'm not sure where The Path falls in terms of graphics, but it is of high psychological intrigue. Going really far back and cheating a little, I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream was brilliant.

There is no inherent flaw, no. However, the longer I observe games, the more I view companies working on graphics and making a pretty presentation first and foremost while shoving aside progress in the core of the game more. The GPU doesn't hurt itself, but it may cause detraction from the key features.

Where this intersects a bit is in games where looking around at pretty things is part of the point. In strategy, you have better combat engines and more development freedom. In RPGs, it's the story. In horror, it's the surreal environment. Better tools can develop a better game. When the objective is to see how nice the images rendered for them are though, quality does improve.

It just doesn't always turn out that they focus on it though...most games decide to focus on the graphics part of it, even if it doesn't always improve experience. I for one couldn't care less if the next Fallout game lets you see stuff from miles away...give me a game that feels like an apocalyptic wasteland (which is something 3 does properly until your ammo and health pack supplies spiral out of control).

Yes, year. I've got a GBA emulator for my modding of owned games, Rome: Total War, Master of Orion II, Cannon Fodder, Panzer General II, RPG Maker VX as games capable of being used on a 2003 PC, Romance of the Three Kingdoms XI, Audiosurf (arguable), and League of Legends against it. While Rome: Total War is debatable, I threw it on the other side as I know it'd work...just on lower end settings.

Multiplication and proofs are generally pretty tricky...we get a lot of erroneous data from them.

For example:
x = 1
x^2 = 1 (Square both sides)
x^2 - 1 = 0
(x+1)(x-1) = 0
x = 1, -1, ergo 1 = -1

Of course here, anybody would tell you that it pops up because we squared both sides. However, let's take a multiply by x route:

The last one is very debatable and extremely dependent on the game. If we averaged all the games out, I think the Massive Online Battle Arena crowd shreds up and destroys all hope of making that an argument against console games...even if you add in the Halo community to console users.

Comes down to what the hardware enables you to do in my opinion. There are emulators for everything except a 360, ps3, psp (that are stable), 3DS, and Vita right now. Being able to play any old game is a huge plus in my opinion.

I was under the assumption that this was done IN Washington. Only reason you'd ask such a local question. I would find it hard to assume people would know all 50 capitals in an instant...it would make sense for Canadians (we only have 13 to memorize), but some are more unusual in USA (Olympia took me a second to get. My process was "Sea...no...it wasn't the most populated...Olympia!").

The new music video from OK Go, made in partnership with Chevrolet. OK Go set up over 1000 instruments over two miles of desert outside Los Angeles. A Chevy Sonic was outfitted with retractable pneumatic arms designed to play the instruments, and the band recorded this version of Needing/Getting, singing as they played the instrument array with the car. The video took 4 months of preparation and 4 days of shooting and recording. There are no ringers or stand-ins; Damian took stunt driving lessons. Each piano had the lowest octaves tuned to the same note so that they'd play the right note no matter where they were struck. Many thanks to Chevy for believing in and supporting such an insane and ambitious project, and to Gretsch for providing the guitars and amps.

I think it's really more because Pingu is aimed at both boys and girls (and maybe nostalgia working), indicating that everyone has seen it, while MLP:FiM was first aimed at young girls.

At a young and very impressionable age, I was stalked, preyed upon and sexually assaulted over 150 times by an adult my family and I trusted completely.

I was a boy with a big dream and the talent to match. I played hockey in the early morning hours, after school, on the weekends and holidays, I even dreamed of hockey. Everyone in my life knew of my passion and my talent, including convicted pedophile Graham James.

Mr. James was a well-known minor hockey coach, and he zeroed in on my family and me. He skillfully manipulated us all, and eventually my parents entrusted my care and well being to him in order to allow me to move to other towns and cities to advance my hockey dream. He was a larger than life figure with the hockey credentials and education as a teacher, to match, and it was drilled into me that he held the keys to making my dream become a reality.

I was just a kid. A child. I was completely under Graham James’s control. And I was scared. I did not have the emotional skills, the knowledge, or the ability to stop the rapes or change my circumstances. I felt lost, alone, and helpless. And those feelings did not stop after I was able to get away from Mr. James; I continued to feel that way for 20+ years afterwards. I descended into years of drug addiction, alcoholism, and addictions to sex, gambling, rage. My loved ones, including my beloved children, spiraled down with me. The pain was all encompassing. And no matter how many NHL games I won, or money I made, or fame I gained could dull the pain of having been sexually abused by Graham James. His sickness changed my life, changed the lives of everyone who was close to me, and caused more pain than can be measured.

Finally, after a night in the New Mexico desert with a gun in my mouth and finger on the trigger, I found the courage to get help and start a long process of healing. I am now reconciled with my children and family, I have been sober for 6 years and I have put the course of my professional life on an amazing path. I am fortunate to speak to victims, survivors, victors and advocates all over North America. From little boys to men as old as 82 have told me they too have been victimized. I am honoured each and every time they share with me. They shed tears, they tell me secrets they have never dared to tell anyone else, and they look for some sort of peace in the midst of their hell.

This court must know that pedophiles like Graham James do not ever change. They are devoid of anything good, and their moral compass does not exist. The statistics show 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 5 boys will be sexually abused before the age of 18. A good majority of these children will grow into angry adults who are completely stunted in their emotional growth, and are unable to contribute to healthy and loving relationships. Some will find healing, but many will not, and the after effects of sexual abuse will affect everyone close to them. They will be unable to find decent employment, they will be unable to fully commit to loving relationships, they will be unable to trust, they will be unable to parent their children, they will be unable to really contribute to society. All because a monster like Graham James preyed upon them, took advantage of their trust and their age, to commit heinous crimes on their bodies, souls and spirits. This is an epidemic and it has to stop.

Do not show leniency to Graham James, he certainly never did to me or any of his other prey. He had many opportunities to stop, to get help, to change, and he never took them. In fact, he kept going. He created situations wherein he could abuse me, he lied time and again, and he found how his authority over me could allow him to do whatever he wanted. He instilled not only physical pain, but also deep emotional pain and left scars so deep and so wide it took decades for me to sleep one night in peace. He was purposeful, he planned his assaults, he took the time and the energy to sexually abuse me every chance he got. And believe me, he will do it again and again and again if ever given the chance. He has no remorse. A monster who will sexually assault children should never be let loose in society ~ never.

When you consider punishment for Graham James I ask this court to think not only about the law, but also about that scared little boy who had nowhere to turn, nowhere to run and nowhere to hide each and every time Graham James raped me. Think about that little boy, his tears and his anger and his helplessness. Think long and hard about YEARS OF SEXUAL ASSAULTS, not just one or two incidents, YEARS OF SEXUAL ASSAULTS, perpetrated by Graham James on me and other children. Think about the journey to hell he sent them and me on. Think about the tears shed that could fill the oceans, rivers and streams by his victims. Think about the ruined relationships, the lost opportunities, the anguish, the fear that follows every waking moment and invades every dream. Only then should you consider punishment. And the punishment should be a lifetime removed from society in a prison where the keys are thrown away, never to be found again.

I urge this court to set an example, not only for other offenders, but to those who have been victimized ~ that this court and this country takes sexual abuse and assault seriously, and that you’ll protect the innocent, harshly punish the guilty and encourage healing for everyone who has ever been even remotely affected by monsters like Graham James.
