View Full Version : Are you emberassed to tell people you like Lucky Star?

A lot of people have the wrong view on the show (mainly the art style and such). So, are you afraid to tell people you like Lucky Star?

For me, it depends. If it's a friend, yes. However, it's a little more difficult when it comes to close relatives.

I would be embarrassed if it were a distant friend, but I would tell close friends.

Funny story, I was talking about anime with a friend of mine after an event, and he stated he liked very few titles... but one of them was Lucky Star. I thought I was gonna shit my pants.

Well I know my friends wouldn't really care.

They'd be like "Oh, ok."

And my parents would be like: "What are you talking about?" (They're both over 50)

My sister might say something like: "Oh, that's your feminine side sticking out." But that's as bad as it gets.

I wonder if it would be different for a girl fan.

I would only tell my friends that actually watch anime. if i told the others, they would be like "okay... and?"

but i do think its the artwork that gives it a more feminine appeal, even though most fans of the series are male.

I'm not afraid to tell anybody I'm a Lucky Star fan, but a helluva lot of people get the wrong idea of the show, just based off of the arts style. Hell, if you showed them a few arts of Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni, they'd think it was some girls show. Well, it was...for the first two or so episodes.

When I realized I had become addicted, I called my friend PirateLordRidley (my friend both IRL and on the net), and I said I had become addicted. I mostly expected him to pick on me about it, but his forst response was actually a "me too" sorta response. Turns out, he liked the anime and had become a fan a week or so prior to me,so he wasn't that big of a deal.

When I told people at school, a couple people in the anime club (who were guys, obviously) looked at me with mixed reactions. Mainly, it was the "he likes a girls' show" look. Then I brought in my Lucky Star DVD a few weeks after that and showed it to them

...they were laughing there asses off in the first five minutes.

I told my closest friends at school first, actually. First was my friend Andrew, who's reaction was just sorta "cool". He reassured me, saying that he liked Chibi Vampire, a shojo manga. I thought that was fine.My friend Pip, however...

"Lucky Star?! Oh, I LOVE that show!!"

No surprise to anyone: she ended up dancing to the opening when I brought the DVD to the anime club.

As it turns out, my friend itjfru (IRL and net friend) had some Lucky Star hentai doujin on his PSP, but had never seen the show. He saw the first three episodes subbed and liked it shortly thereafter.

Later, I found out a bunch of other guys(yes, as in males) were Lucky Star fans, too. One had the full theme on his PSP. Another asked to borrow my DVD. And I wouldn't be surprised if they both knew how to dance to the opening.

So, really, I'm not shy to come out and say "Hey, I'm a Lucky Star fan". People nowadays just either don't really care or like something similar. One way or another, there's nothing to be shy about...

Well seeing as im in college, i doubt id find an anime or manga club.

But i also despise naruto and its followers. naruto isnt that great imo.

i think its a good thing this anime has a lot of other anime references. im a fan of initial d, and if it wasnt for that initial d scene, i wouldnt have ever watched this series. having a lot of references also gives fans of other genres and anime to relate to.

I haven't told my parents about it yet but my little sister (she's 9) loves lucky star and my parents know about it, she also introduced the anime to her friend, she told her about the characters, they're intersets, family relations and stuff.....so now one person who's not in my family knows I like this anime. and as for me, I know that if I tell my friend he'll might not like it so everytime I almost get caught on watching LS I just tell him that it's an anime that my sister watches. and he's like:"anime? to me anime is like drama show in cartoons" so I tell him:"but the anime my sister watches is a comedy one". but it doesn't seem to change his mind so I guess i'll keep it a secret from him >_>.

Think about it though, there are a lot of things in Lucky Star that would appeal to the male audience, the moe factors, the supposed Konata x Kagami thing, and that episode when they're at the beach, there are a lot of things like that, and I know there's more, that appeal to males, although I like Lucky Star for much more then that.

I am, but the God concept is very light compared to other anime.

I'm allowed to watch most sci-fi based anime, like Gundam, Gurren Lagann, and (of course) Haruhi Suzumiya.

But the most Christian-friendly anime I watch is Lucky Star, which I am addicted to (why else would I be here?). School Rumble also ties with Lucky Star.

Hm...
I'm not afraid to tell most people that I like Lucky Star.

Some close friends of mine that watch lots of anime are like "Lucky Star...isn't that a bit overrated?" (I tend not to watch super popular shows.) But, I don't care. Infact, I tend to get them to like Lucky Star. xD They know I like it though, and don't really care.

Only time I'm "afraid" to let people I like Lucky Star or any other anime is if they obviously really don't like anime. If they show an interest or are curious about it, I don't mind so much. ^^

'John Smith'
07-04-2009, 04:47 PM
My answer to this topic thread is that Lucky Star isn't really embarrassing to be caught watching in the first place. Despite being centered around four Japanese school girl's, this anime is primarily targeted at males. The humour in this show pretty much depends on references to other anime and the traits of otaku. The majority of the people who get these references and are otaku, are male. The only reason one would be embarrassed to be fan of Lucky Star is if one is an "in-the-closet-otaku," meaning one is embarrassed to be found watching any anime other than the most main-stream like Naruto or One Piece.

However, I dont think I've really experimented because I don't go around the town telling people I watch Lucky Star. It's not so much that I won't spread the word, but more the fact that I only meet the same people on a day-to-day basis. My friends are all otaku so they <3 Lucky Star, it's not like I need to tell them about it...

I've never told him about Lucky Star, though. Of course I know him enough to know that if I told him I liked it and showed him the art style, he'd laugh at me. XD So, in some cases I'm kinda afraid to tell people I like Lucky Star.

I had this dream last night where I watch a random episode of lucky star and then my friend comes and i'm like "oh shit!" and then he says "hey man, what are you watching?" and I say "errrrrrrrrr.........it's an anime" and he says "anime? what's it called?" and I say "it's lucky star, it's a funny anime" and then we watch while I explain him about the characters and the story but he doesn't seem to listen to what I say and after 2 minutes he says "man this is stupid i'm outta here......" and he leaves while I continue watching......... that's what I remember. and when I woke up I was glad that it was just a dream lol.

Sometimes there are really great gems in the newer seasons, but the best seasons are the first ones.

Same applies to anything, really. It's difficult to make a series as long as they've been doing South Park and still make it funny.

A lot of people have the wrong view on the show (mainly the art style and such). So, are you afraid to tell people you like Lucky Star?

For me, it depends. If it's a friend, yes. However, it's a little more difficult when it comes to close relatives.

No, I wouldn't be embarrassed to tell people I like Lucky Star, because where I live, no-one except for me has even heard of it before, nyaan.

As am I. And it makes for a lonely life. But, I cannot -- I WILL not -- knuckle under and be a brain-dead drone like all the people I see around me. I cannot -- I WILL not -- self-medicate myself with beer, cigarettes and NASCAR (for example) to reduce my I.Q. in the name of Fitting In. I have to be true to myself and follow my own muse. Seriously, I did both Kyon's monologue (from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Light Novel) and an alternate-ending to Endless Eight in my Theatre class! I also walk around school singing Japanese (though for some reason, I always end up singing "Cruel Angel's Thesis" or "God Knows"), and I even use a slight verbal tic, similar to (and I DESPISE using this for comparison) Deidara in Naruto. (he says "hm" and "ha", I say "eh?" or "ne?")

I would also wear one of the Pokemonballs that Burger King came out with for the 1st Pokemon movie. I would also play my Pokemon Gameboy game on the bus alot too. I was so into Pokemon then i got the nick name "The Pokeman" in school. Odd thing is noone ever made fun of me because of it. True but the real problem is most people dont really understand anime well, and will only watch anime if it...
A. Has to do with "Ninjas" named "Naruto"
or
B. "Shinigami's AKA Death gods"
or
C. "Notebooks that kill people."
Not really dissing the animes, but its just that those were the ones that came to America and now people become Narutards and such.

Not on the web, which is pretty much the only place where it's actually a relevent topic for me most of the time. Though if someone asks me which anime I'd watch, I usually bring up something like Fist of the North Star. Most of the time, no one's ever heard of it, and like the Lucky Star case, I was a little late into the whole fanbase myself--Kenshiro's since become a favorite anime character of mine along with the likes of Afro Samurai (shut up, I say he counts!).

The most recent person who'd actually asked me if I watched anime was my fourteen year-old cousin who's into games and is a bit of an anime fan (yet surprisingly enough, but thankfully so, she HATES Twilight). I don't know if she'd heard of Lucky Star, but I actually did fill her in a little on FoTNS. She seemed impressed.

Actually, I'm pretty sure the MAJORITY of Lucky Star fans are male.

there is another problem. most females are caught up in their stupid big purses and make-up and whatever else. why can't there be more girls who like anime? i mean its not like its a crime to like it. Most people ive talked to who hate anime told me that girls shouldnt like anime and manga mainly because most main characters or side characters in an anime are really hot girls. If you ask me the really hot girls part is true but that doesnt mean just guys have to watch it, its just a stupid theory made by those who hate anime so they can use something to bring the girls down whenever they get into a fight. at least thats what i think. <3

I kind of like it that most people look down on anime. The fact that we anime lovers are a minority makes me feel part of a small and elite club of some sorts. I wouldn't like it if every one I knew at places like my school enjoyed shows like Lucky Star and K-On! as much as I do.

Not at all.

The friends I have grew up with always watched Cartoon Network and some of it's girly shows too, like the Powerpuff Girls. I don't think I would be traumatized if I said "I love Lucky Star" right to their faces. =P

But yeah, I've met some shizzles who think that just because Lucky Star has an almost all-girl cast means that it's automatically a girl show and that you're gay for watching it. That certainly isn't the case at all. It's more of the content of the show and the show's dialogue that matters. Can't discriminate unless you actually watch the show.

There really isn't any real anime haters in my school anyways, it's just the neighborhood city kids that think to seem that anime is the work of the devil for some reason, so conversation in my own hometown about Lucky Star or anime in general usually goes quite smoothly.

Our class has this pretty interesting set up, 1/3 of the class loves anime/manga, 1/3 thinks it is stupid and the rest does not care. The haters still don't think that it's gay and so on, they don't just like it. They all well know who likes and who does not, and everybody are just friends together. I personally think that anime is awesome, and 3/4 of my friends don't think so. But, still no 'rixa' about it. Yeah, might have bad grammar here and forgot who/what I am quoting, but still I shall post this when I find that Submit Reply button and seems that I found it as I read the name of teh button and this wall of nonsense looks ridicilous. Honestly, I'm kinda of embarrassed to tell anyone that I like anime in general, except for the friends I have that like anime, which isn't too many. In my neighborhood, anime is considered to be nerdy for whatever reason, and I don't want to be considered a nerd.

Even if I told my friends I like anime, I probably wouldn't tell them I like Lucky Star. My friends that watch anime think Lucky Star is girly since it's an almost all girl cast. And my friends love to crack jokes, so that just gives them a reason to do so. :p

I mean, I can say it all I want online, but I couldn't do it in real life.

this i hate. just because something has all girls in it doesnt make it for just girls. a good example would be a playboy. i know it is for a different use but it does show that a magazine full of girls can be for guys.

this is what i do. i tell my friends i love lucky star and its my favorite anime. if one of them said that it was for girls, id call him a fag and laugh cause i know they all watched powerpuff girls.

Lucky Star is my favorite anime, and all of my friends are well aware of that even if they don't watch anime. I've gotten some of them to watch it because of my bringing it up all the time. One of them sometimes makes my day by saying I'm just like Konata.

In short, I am not embarrased.

A lot of people have the wrong view on the show (mainly the art style and such). So, are you afraid to tell people you like Lucky Star?

For me, it depends. If it's a friend, yes. However, it's a little more difficult when it comes to close relatives.

First: Hello everyone. I'm glad I found this forum. I see a lot of interesting threads here.
But lets back to talking with people about Lucky Star: well, not much at all. I showed this anime only to my brother few days ago. He liked the "Legendary A girl" scenes plus a few others, but not much more. We both used to do anime all night marathons during summer holidays, but I think it will be a little hard to learn him to watch LS. ;) Unfortunately none of my friends are anime fans. Sure almost all of us know Dragon Ball (a part of childhood of every kid born in late 80's in my country - 16:40 PM and there was no one playing outside) but it's only me who interested anime more. I think that nothing bad would happen if I tell someone about my addiction to Lucky Star, but there is some kind of a blockade that I dont want to break. Even when I'm watching this anime I prefer to be alone at home. :P
Peace.

Only people I know who like anime a bit are my 2 brothers, but my little bro is uptight about most stuff and he insults me all the time because of my tastes. There's too much nothingness in Lucky Star for him to like it, but it's funny, so he doesn't judge me for it. Took him forever to drop the whole Lovely Complex thing though. <.<;

My older brother introduced me to Trigun, Serial Experiments Lain and Neon Genesis Evangelion, but he's never talked to me about anime ever since, and those were 10+ years ago... I still think he'd probably love K-On! and possibly like Lucky Star though, so I may talk to him about them.

The rest of my family knows I'm an Otaku (well, they wouldn't say Otaku), but they don't care about anime or manga. I don't really have any friends, and nobody I ever meet seems to like anime, except for a guy I knew back in high school who liked CardCaptor Sakura.

So yeah, 'cept for my 2 brothers, I'm embarassed to tell people I like Lucky Star, or anime in general. I don't buy posters and stuff, because I'd be scared to be found with them.

Why is it so hard to have real life friends who like Anime? Is it some invisible force which forces this upon us?

Being called a pedophile and having cops watch you, has nothing to do with being somebody who loves anime.
There are many different varieties of otakus, doesn't mean you have to be one who watches mainly loli-fanservice animes such as Kodomo no Jikan, not saying that anime is bad cuz i for one loved it.
You could be someone who watches animes such as Eden of the East or Baccano; you would never be called a pedophile or lose friends due to this.

Animes per se are not forbidden, but they are equal to real material. Kodomo no Jikan, for example, is considered the same as if it were a real show with real characters, which would probably count as child porn, Mitusudomoe as well, would be completely forbidden for "sexualization of real minors". Also, there is no definite age limit, below 18 is considered child porn if there are any sexual themes, but 18 and above can be considered child porn too if they look like below 18, and the court always say it does .... thus, this entire board is actully illegal here, for you have seen the fan club threads, right? And since possession of items are not needed, but merely having seen anything, i am thus technically a criminal for visiting, for example, the Konata Izumi thread. Even Yui Naromi might count, despite age.

So if i tell people i like Lucky Star, i am potentially a criminal, which by the standard of the current laws here, is true and i would be, for visiting this forum.

Then if they think like that give them just explain and if they don't want to listen then just say that you won't stop watching it and if they don't like it then that's their problem. I'm saying it again I were you I won't even think about hiding. Maybe you can tell them if they ask , but if they don't it's not like keeping it a secret or something. First of all, excuse myself for pointing it out, but you need to make your sentences more consistant, i have a hard time following what you are saying.

Also, maybe i should point out that it can give up to 6 years in prison, so i would not want to take my chances "explaining". If they ask, the most sane decision would be to deny.

No, Lucky Star certainly would not, but this site would. And as i have said, age is often irrelevant, it counts if the characters are appearing, looking or acting child-like. Which fits almost all LS characters, though the show is ok, of course, other might not be though. But the thing is, Lucky Star could count as child porn if it was more like Mitsudomoe, and that fact alone makes you're friends believe you are capable of criminal acts.

For example, not long ago a Manga-Translater were arrested for doing his work and translating a Hentai Manga that, although sexual, clearly contained only adults, but it was justifyed with them looking child-like.

I understand your point, and the consequences that could follow.
Anyone could draw a child, then claim that isn't a child but, in fact, an adult age 20+, etc.
You're arguing against lolicons, which is the only problem that could come out of watching Lucky Star.

I don't think this is non-West/West thing. Nearly every state is against children or images of children involved in a sexual context. Some just happen to be a bit stricter about whether such imagery should be allowed depicted through drawings or cartoons, regardless if those countries are within or outside the Western world.

Well, regarding America, the United States Supreme Court's ruling in Ashcroft v. Free Speech Coalition ruled that the Child Pornography Prevention Act of 1996 was facially invalid in prohibiting virtual or cartoon child pornography.
While in Japan, people have been sentenced to death over similar cases.

In one of the worlds most democratical countries, which is why you probably would not believe me if i told you. Our image is way better than the truth behind it. Would you still believe someone who actually lives there more than whatever positiveness you may have heard?
I'd believe you, that's why I asked.

I have sent PM's to avoid Off-Topicness. If anyone else wonders, please stop wondering. It puts a pressure on me.

OK , we get it. If we live in a country like yours we have to keep quite about it. You're right Z008MJ. If I were in your shoes in this situation I won't tell anyone either.

I actually was reluctant to start Lucky Star, but I had just finished with Durarara, and needed something light for my heart, haha! Anyway, so Lucky Star gave me the wrong idea when I first picked it up, but I really got addicted! Adorableness aside, I really love the humor in it! :o)

Anyway, I probably would be embarrassed as none of my friends are into the whole 'Anime/Manga' scene -- or anything really 'Asian' for that matter.
