The NorthAmerican manga translation gave her a New Jersey accent instead of the anime's Houston accent. Her all-purpose Kansai-ben comeback "nandayanen" became "fuggedaboudit" instead of the anime's "why in the heck".

I think that Osaka's southern accent makes sense, Osaka had a Japanese southern accent and because that is impossible to do in English they gave her an American southern accent so in a way it is canon to the original. i don't see why people hate the dub, the voices fit not a lot of stuff is cut out and the acting is good.

Ahh, the Holy Azumanga...

I loved this series. It was a nice balance of comedy, heartwarmingness, slice-of-lifeness (yes, AD is a SOL series. I will defend that to the death.), the positive side of school life, and utter Japanese batsh*t insanity.

I tried rewatching an episode of Azumanga Daioh and found it kind of "eh" compared to what I remember, however,

This series is always going to be special for me. If it weren't for me being bored out of my skull and checking this out of the school library, it wouldn't've lead to me deciding to spend my Christmas break watching the entire anime, which lead to me watching Death Note, which lead to me watching Haruhi, etc., etc.

Basically, Azumanga has pure nostalgia value for being the show that got me into watching anime in the first place. And Osaka's wake-up-call with the knife is still absolute win.

I don't think Yomi is really mean. I find her sensitive more than anything else, in the way that a joke about her weight for instance would make her snap and act meanly perhaps.

In-universe Answer: You don't know those are the only people she hangs out with, they're in the same class and study together, stick together in trips, but she might spend more time with people she met in the swim club, or from her first year class, the on screen episodes aren't their entire lives

Realistic Answer: If she hung out with other people, it would ruin the group dynamic. They need to stick together because PLOT.

Tangent: speaking of the group dynamic, I always liked how they AzuGirls could be slit into halves. The stupid half and the smart half, the athletic half and the non-sporty half etc.


And I actually agree with you about Yomi, but then I tend to dislike characters in comedies who aren't by themselves funny, and need jokes bounced off them (although strait characters are always needed, grant you). There are some comic foils I like, but Yomi isn't one of them.

I'm sure replies here will get flamed as trolling/spamming/necromancing, just because this thread is on page 2 as i write this. Anyway, it's not like this site got an overflow of active threads so anything new that actually contributes with anything can only be good.

Which is kind of ironic, as i just realized it is too late to write a long post now, i will have to do that tommorow. Luckily it seems there are people here who would to love to respond to any question or misunderstanding one might have.

So, after having finally, late as it is, gotten around to watch Azumanga Daioh, and is having mixed opinions on it. I chosed to start this one now since i needed something easy on the mind, and sure did i get it, i can litteraly feel my brain cells dying one by one watching this. That's not to say it's not worth watching though.

First of all i really wanna praise the animation, i think it's lovely and very appealing. It's almost hypnotic, it looks so good.

But then, back to the point of actual entertainment value, i got these opinions that i can't look past.

1. Is it just me or is there very little actual character insight? So Sakaki is quiet, Tomo is energic, Osaka is slow, Chiyo supposedly smart, and Yu-something-teacher is b!tchy.

Nothing else i should know about them, no, not? Moving on then.

There are also 2 other girls with pretty much no screen time, so i can't even remember their names.

2. Again, this might just be me, no, this is probably very much just me, but i found AD to have a bigger moe appeal than LS, or atleast doing no work to hide it. Anyone else feeling so?

3. While many scenes can be funny, the jokes are often too obvious way ahead of them occuring. So when something funny happens it feels like if someone told you the same joke they told you 10 seconds ago, and obviously that is no longer funny. It really feels like you can actually predict the dialogue at times.

4. I also found the pacing to be somewhat of equal to a retired snail with rheumatism. No offence.

Because frankly, AD makes the first episode of LS seem exciting. Like ten times more exciting.

Seeing Chiyo sing and cook in the first AD episode might have caused brain damages on me. And they say K-On is all moe ....

5. Once again, is it just me or is the opening actually a bit creepy? It's like its hiding something. Still very addicting though.

In the end though, Azumanga Daioh is very watchable, and at times even very enjoyable, but i don't think i could ever call it the greatest SoL there is.

Azumanga Daioh was the first anime I watched and I loved it, it's really random and has no real plot which I like in animes. My favourite character is too hard to pick...I love all of them. I also have too many favourite episodes and the only real thing I dislike about the series is that it's so short D': Well my name on this forum is Waka Laka Osaka so I guess I am quite obsesed ;D

Have you watched Azumanga Daioh and what did you think of it? 8D

Azumanga Daioh and Lucky star were the two series that got me into anime. I remember watching the Osaka knife scene on youtube and found it freaking hilarious. Never did watch the anime though. Just read the manga. All of it. Multiple times. And it still cracks me up.
