I recently completed the Lucky Star anime subs (I only watch those because the dub sucks. I can't even pronounce my own name right! DX), and I felt prtetty empty after it was all over. I decided to check Wikipedia to see if there was anything else Lucky Star-related I could check out. And what a surprise: the manga still goes on in Japan!! I have checked numerous sites, but they have all discontinued with scanning the manga. I need to know if there is a site that has uploaded scans of the manga all the way up to where it's printed in Japan. Could you all help?I'm a huge fan of Lucky Star, and I don't wanna be deprived like this!

The only place that I know of that have been scanlating the LS manga, were Xamayon (http://xamayon.org/star.php), but they stopped halfway through the first volume. To the best of my knowledge, no-one has scanned all the way to where they are now in Japan (or even started volume 2).
However, the first volume of the manga is being released in May in America, and the other volumes will follow shortly, so you could probably get it then.
Meanwhile, as Konata Suzumiya said, you should check out the OVA

They all stopped scanlating because Bandai lisenced the manga. It's coming out in stores next month. Have a little patience, and try supporting the show finanically instead of bumming everything off of the internet. In this economy, the industry (both in the USA and Japan) needs all the support it can get.

Also, Bandai and Bang! Zoom! worked very hard to give you an accurate dub for Lucky Star. Shiraishi was the only member in the entire cast who didn't pronounce his name right. Everyone else's was kept as is, including honorifics! Do you know how rare it is that a dub would even consider keeping honorifics in their translation? They even tried to match the English Haruhi VA's to their Lucky Star counterparts, just like what was done in Japan. On top of that, hardly a single line was really changed. Instead of loading down the original dialoge with American jokes, they kept all the Japanese jokes in and gave you notes in the DVD case to explain them. If you're looking to complain about inaccuracy or inconsistency, the Lucky Star dub is not the place to do it.

And on top of that, saying "the dub sucks" is a lousy reason for not buying the DVDs. You can easily watch the subtitled version on all of them.

Yes, I know of the OVA and have seen it. It's the first thing I saw after I finished the anime.

And I suppose I could wait for the manga in America. As long as they don't pull the kinda crap they did with the anime dub. DX

Fandubs...

"subs, not dubs" is my anime motto, either way I listen to the anime, not read so I don't really care >.<

But I don't think anyone did a "good" job on tsukasa's voice... Especially when she says "Kona-chan" (ugh my ears...)

However I did appreciate the fact that they literally translated everything rather then changing some things to make it easier to understand for Americans

The dvds come with notes? Tis a shame they dont sell it where i live. I was also going to buy the OVA DVD, but not for $60 i aint!!

And i watched both subbed and dubbed versions. I actually enjoy the dubbed ones. Just be glad it didnt turn out like the Initial D dubbing.

The things that are wrong with the dub? Well, yes, they DO mispronounce a lot of things, but you are also forgetting that the script changes a lot of the lines (I cross-referenced, I know what I'm talking about), the horrid voice actors (I'm looking at you, Patricia), and the fact that they put in too much swearing.

I stick with original, straight from the tv videos (my aunts record the shows on video and sensor to me via airmail)

No, you don't know what you're talking about. Try cross-referencing ANY subtitled version of ANY video in ANY language to its dubbed version, and you will find that all of them make subtle changes to the lines. They have to.


Well, I haven't seen the Lucky Star dubs. But often when something is being dubbed, lines have to be altered so that they fit. For example, something that's quick to say in Japanese might take longer in English. There are also puns that won't make sense in English and such.


What he/she said. They can't translate every line spot-on literally, or it wouldn't fit the mouth movements. Not only that, it wouldn't sound as natural. And despite that, the Lucky Star dub actually kept some puns that didn't make sense in English. Tell me what they mispronounced, besides "Shiraishi".

Kid, if you wanna hear terrible acting, try taking "Cardcaptors", "Gravitation", or any dub made before the late 90's for a spin. The Lucky Star translation and actors are a godsend compared to what we used to have to put up with. Yeah Patty's actor wasn't that great (she was a newbie), but Konata, Kagami, Tsukasa and Miyuki were all voiced by seasoned professionals with years and years of experience, who worked hard to portray their characters accurately. I've seen interviews with them and they do not take their roles as lightly as you think.

Do you speak Japanese? How do you know about accuracy, or swearing, or anything? Sorry to break this to you, but teenagers swear. Bang! Zoom! Did not step out of line this time. I'm an extremely picky dub watcher, and I loved this one. I never love dubs. You really just sound like a dismissive brat who will find the smallest problem with an otherwise good dub, decide that it's horrible, and then bum the anime off of the internet, feeling completely righteous and justified for it. >.>

By the way, who were you talking to? I don't think it's me but In case it is, yes I am pure Japanese and speak and read fluently

I can write by hand but not as well as I wish, I live in America so it's hard to remember all those kanjis without using them on a regular basis, of course I can type fluently because I don't actually have to write them out

subs are good, but I prefer RAW. I think RAW is the best.

Yes it's passionate, because I'm passionate about good work done on my favorite show. Seeing some closed-minded snob try to pick it apart when they don't know what on earth they're talking about really pisses me off.

About the whole dubbing thing, I'd say that the voice actors try their hardest to get in-character and make it sound good. Honestly, the original is not always the best. Cut the people some slack, it may look easy, but have the critics ever tried dubbing it over themselves? It's a job for a reason.

Yes they are. :\ They're copyrighted material being distributed without permission, which is illegal. Why do you think scanlators often stop when a license is announced?
