View Full Version : Haruhi Suzumiya (light novels)

Well, since news of the novels seems to have spread like wildfire...
The Haruhi Suzumiya anime series began life as this series of young-adult novels written by Nagaru Tanigawa and illustrated by Noizi Itoh. The novels, with the rare partial exception of The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, are longer and more insightful on the characters than the anime and manga adaptations, revealing things such as Kyon expressing massive inner squee whenever Mikuru does something cute or is dressed up in a new outfit, amongst other things, and are viewed by some as being the superior experience.

I have read the novels that are currently out in English which is Melancholy and Sighs. The novels are definitely the best representation of the series.
Next we'll be getting Boredom sometime this summer and then Disappearance,

I'm the most excited for Disappearance. I loved the fan-translation enough, I loved the film version enough (and, damn did I LOVE the film version), so I'm gonna get both when they release Stateside.

I'm not really that big a fan of novels (in general). Would someone like me still be able enjoy these even if most novels bore me? XD

Oh, hell yeah. I myself am not a big fan of most novels, but these novels are written in a way that keeps you constantly engaged and entertained. (Kyon's narrating it all. Go figure...) These are some of the best novels I've read, so I highly reccomend them to you.

True. Also, the writing style is minimalistic, which is even better.

EDIT: Spoiler about the tenth novel!!
Ryoko Asakura, the alien girl who tried to kill Kyon in Melancholy, has been resurrected by the Data Integration Thought Entity. But here's the big twist: She has to help protect Kyon now!!

The novels are coming out at a faster rate than they used to be (Boredom and Disappearance are only separated by about 3-4 months), so we'll be getting it at a somewhat reasonable time.

Y'know, I think I'm gonna have a tough time reading this new novel when it comes out...
Because after watching that scene in the Disappearance film where Ryoko stabs Kyon and starts slinging his blood everywhere and whatnot, I now get creeped out whenever I see Ryoko Asakura.
EDIT: Speaking of which, I just had a massive stroke of genius!
Since Asakura is resurrected in the tenth book, could it be possible that this new novel will link directly into the ending of Disappearance? If this new Ryoko went rogue and went back to that point in the alternate-space-time that Yuki created in Disappearance, it would explain the event that prevented Ryoko from completely murdering Kyon right then and there, when the SOS Brigade (including Kyon himself) began fighting back to protect him and deliver the restoration program into Alt-Yuki, as was originally intended by normal Yuki.
Remember, though, I'm not up-to-date on the novels quite yet, so I may be inconsistent with my theory.

The novels are, so far, absolutely amazing. It's almost a pity that the anime aired first...
Not saying I don't like the anime, but it's kind of a shame that you know how the story is going to end, when it's told in such a fantastic manner.

The anime was based off the light novels. I think they haven't actually released any new ones since the anime aired (10 should be coming out this year in Japan).
Slightly unrelated, today in a DVD store I noticed that they had Haruhi. The index card by them spelt the name as 'The Melancoly of Haruti'.
Well, they got 'the' and 'of' right, at least...

That don't mean shit. TVTropes. Adaptation Displacement/Adaptation First. Haruhi is the worst offender of both.

That is also true. It's also heavy Adaptation Distillation.

Yes, but the movie has a good mix of both Distillation AND Expansion, which actually makes it better than the novel, IMHO.
