Definitely "KO-na-ta". Listen to the Japanese audio in the anime; it's always right! :D

And also the dub confirms this.

You can probably get away with saying "KO-no-ta" as well

Whats the sodding difference? Hell why did i even vote for the top one? Ive always said konata as konata.

The only character name i have ever had trouble with is Tsukasa. But ive learn't that now,

Oh, i see the top one was the wrong answer?
Meh. It should have said The Japanese pr American (Dub) way. Because i say it how its said in the Japanese versons.

--EDIT--

ko NA ta?
KO na ta?

Still cant see the difference...

--EDIT--

Just figured out the difference,
ko NA ta is how Tsukassa some times pernounces it
KO na ta is how everyone usualy pernounces it.

I voted for the wrong one, i pernounce it KO na ta,
*face palm* You can tell im half Irish xD

KO-na-ta, definetely. But I've seen some people pronouncing it as ko-na-TA. Weird.

Well, someone at least tell me which is the most commonly used one!

It's like my annoyance with the word "Yum Kipper"! Is it kip-POR, or KIP-per?!

It is pronounced with the stress on the first syllable. Just listen to the way they pronounce it in the Jap version and/or dub ~nyaa-nyaa.

KO-na-ta.
At least, thats how the japanese version and the only japanese kid I know pronounce it.
I don't know, I think hearing it as ko-NA-ta would rape my ears...

Happens once in the dub: in the "she's an open book" scene (where Miyuki's Mom stubs her toe when answering the 'phone), Yukari hands the receiver to Miyuki and tells her, "It's koNAta-chan". Pretty glaring to hear it pronounced that way.

Bokke and Tsukkomi Routine, anyone?

Yukari: "Okay Osaka, you play the bokke and I'll be the tsukkomi."

Anyways, so on the pronunciation of our blue haired midget hero...

To be honest, if a forum is 100% on topic, and discourages off-topicness, I tend to see it as boring and elitist.

Admittedly, yes. I don't roll my tongue and such.

I have an excuse, though. I'm from the South.

I _could_ pronounce it properly, but in casual conversation, I don't.

Roll your tongue? You don't use the tongue to pronounce vowels. Your location is no excuse either.

You pretty much pronounce it as how it is written. Just try to forget your American accent. Like "Tōhō" or "Tĺhĺ". "Tawhaw" is perhaps the closest way to write it in English.

Also, I pronounce Touhou correctly. So hah.

I'll stick with my American-ese pronunciation... It makes my lisp hurt less. D:

Oh, also, if you think Japanese is dependent on how you stress syllables, you should study Chinese. :D

And don't even get me started on Haruhi. My mouth honestly doesn't work that way.

Maybe its because I grew up in a Chinese household, but i think aside from memorization its a really easy language~~~

But the fact that some characters have no less than five ways of pronouncing them, based on how you raise or lower your tone would drive me nuts trying to learn it as a second language.

Not to mention the whole "the same character's meaning changes when you cross borders" thing.

Then again, I guess that the same thing applies to the western alphabet too. I could see how learning Chinese would be easier if it was your first language, because I grew up learning both English (at home) and Dutch (in public) as primary languages.

Personal experience: you hear other people murdering it so often that you start to second-guess yourself. Add to that: knowing just enough about Japanese to know you don't know enough about Japanese to know how to properly pronounce words in Japanese, you know?

Bump.

At first, I thought Konata was pronounced KO-NEIGH-DA, instead of the correct KO-NA-TA. =P I can never pronounce Japanese names in anime the first time I watch it. Like I remember I pronounced Rei (NGE) RYE, instead of the correct pronunciation of RAY. =P
