A little less common than your normal 'game'. It's basically what it sounds like, a story, except visual. Generally includes paths you can take the story in, and Good/Average/Bad endings.

Anybody play them? If so, which are your favorites?

Katawa Shoujo - is the only one that i have played.. though its just a demo, dont know when the final will be released.
its pretty lovely but the setting is probably not for everyone because here you're going to date disabled girls (your own char got a heart illness and is now going to a special schools for such people) and not "healthy" girls like in every other visual novel game.. ^^

but i would like to try another game like this.. can someone recommend one?

edit: a note: katawa shoujo the game is based on an idea, created on 4chan. as far as i know, the developers are from there as well.

Damn, I was gonna say that one. It's the only visual novel game I've played as well, I've heard that the full version will have h-scenes but there's an option to turn them off. H-scenes with disabled anime girls does sound interesting.

Also, if you want a visual novel similar to Katawa Shoujo then you could try Narcissu, I haven't played it but it's very similar and it's only a few hours long. There's also Yume Miru Kusuri but I hear it's very heavy on the porn. Kana Imouto is pretty similar, but it's a VERY emotional visual novel.

i think Higurashi also started as a visual novel (though not a dating sim)

the only one ive actually played is Harvest Moon (which i believe, given the format, to be a visual novel)

yep it is said that there will be h-scenes as well.
but i hope that they will keep this more "romantically" setup and dont focus too much on the hentai stuff.. that would be disappointing.

you played it too... which is your favorite girl untill now? :>
i think i like lilly and hanako the most, lillys end was the first that i archieved.
but rin is kinda interesting.

not good :/

that sounds better^^

I remember I was looking into one at one point... It was some sort of horror thing set in a school. But then I found it was only half translated. Then I forgot what it was called. Ho-hum.

I've been wanting to play Lucky Star: Ryouou Gakuen Otosai for the longest-ass time now. But I don't have the money for an import.

Is there such a thing as a translated import? My friend says there is...

I've played a quite a few free ones, like Narcissu and such.

The longest one I've played through is Clannad, but I had to remove it before finishing the game because the non-Unicode language setting messed up my updates. The text was jumbled garbage.

Yes, it sounds MUCH better. :)

I've only gotten up to the part where you first meet Lily, so I haven't seen all the characters yet. My favorite would have to be Misha, I love her attitude, she's a little weird and I'm still wondering if she has a disability or not. Shizune would have to be my 2nd favorite, I know she's deaf but I just like her for some reason, not sure why. :) I don't know what I think of Lily yet, she seems like a nice person though.

I don't think they would try and focus on the h-scenes too much, it doesn't seem like the type of game that would.

Also, my friend sent me this screen shot, he said it's the only character he's seen make this face. :3

yep, until now, shizune is the only one with this weird face^^

then you still have something to do, the other storylines are good too :>

about misha, i wonder if she will be a girl that you can date as well.. though it looks like this wont be the case.
anyway, the fans guess that misha is a little deaf and its because of that, that she talks so loud.
or that she has something like aspergers syndrome or something like "COLD: Compulsively Obsessive Loudness Disorder"
http://ks.renai.us/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=1386 read it, its a thread about misha, there i get the infos^^

I've started playing Umineko No Naku Koro Ni.....my God..what transcendent beauty..what purifying light!

Even though only one character relates it to Higurashi, it's so damn good...

It's nice to see the fans coming up with their own ideas but I doubt she has asperger's syndrome.

I was told that I may have it but I'm not in a school for disabled people. :P I don't think mental disorders CAN get you in a school for disabled people can it?

Turns out that that was because Corpse Party is a Doujin Game, not a VN. And it still isn't translated in full.

I'd think they'd probably be more in a school for people with mental disorders. Their needs for education are very different. Although most of the time they're integrated with the regular school system.
The school in the VN seems to be more for physical disabilities.

I like the real novel games. Where it's like you went into the page turn to page 861. Well there was not many that long. But some...

Ah, those choose-your-own adventure books! Those were fun!

On a side note, would Pheonix Wright count as a VN?

Yeah. You play a lawyer and you have to find evidence and defend people in court. It's pretty fun.

Phoenix Wright, I've always wanted to play that game. Especially since Battler from Umineko resembles him :p

Yep, that's one of the reasons why I think she doesn't have any mental disorders, it's a school for people that are physically disabled so... I have no idea why she's there but whatever, she's still a great character. :)

All that's left is for you to enjoy it then.

It's better than Higurashi, in my opinion.

I just found this on /a/ and downloaded the VN, about 10 minutes into it and I fell in love with it. It reminds me a lot of the stuff Key has done. It's an american made independant VN, but the art and story is amazing! Though Only Act I is released

I won't spoil it for you guys, but the basic plot is this. Set in the fictional Yamaku High School for disabled children, located somewhere in modern Japan. Hisao Nakai, a normal boy, has his life turned upside down when a long-dormant congenital heart defect forces him to move to a new school after a long hospitalization. Despite his difficulties, Hisao is able to find friends, and perhaps love, if he plays his cards right.

The gameplay of Katawa Shoujo is choice-based, with the player reading through text and occasionally making decisions that impact events or dialogue within the story. The goal of the game is to make certain choices that will advance a relationship with one of the five heroines and result in the viewing of the corresponding heroine's erotic scenes and ending.

Also, the main page has a sentence for each one of the main characters. The sayings are contradicting the main characters' disabilities.

Haha i've been waiting a while for this to show up! I've had it for a while and i agree its great. This VN kicks the ass of Captain Awesome.
